COVID BRIEFING, OCTOBER 15, 2020

  • Good afternoon Fowler Family!
  • COVID UPDATE:
    • As of 1:00 pm October 14, 2020, Dallas County Health and Human Services is reporting 504 additional positive casesof 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19)
    • Of the 504 new cases, 11 are from September
    • Dallas County cumulative totals are 87,835 confirmed cases and 1,058 deaths
    • Of the confirmed cases, 8097 or 9% have required hospitalization
      • 367 patients were hospitalized as of October 13
        • Of that number, 115 were in ICU
      • This is a change from earlier in the year – Hospitals are having to create bed space on non-ICU floors; early on, ICU beds were in higher demand
      • This can be attributed to better therapies and treatments now available
      • Diabetes has been the underlying condition most reported in hospitalizations – with 1/3 of those hospitalized
    • Based on our rising cases in Dallas County and in a rise of hospitalizations, Judge Jenkins has moved Dallas County from ORANGE Zone to RED ZONE – which is Stay Home, Stay Safe
      • Please consider this recommendation in making decisions for your own health and wellbeing
      • This does not change what we are doing at Fowler at this time
        • We continue to recommend our Love Your Neighbor Basics which is aligned with the recommendations from the CDC and health depts
        • Your personal decisions regarding who you see and where you go, wearing a mask and maintaining social distancing is as critical to the safety of your neighbors and staff as anything we could mandate
      • If we learn something different, our recommendations will change
  • Fowler Updates:
    • We have been approved by Health and Human Services to begin our Essential Caregiver Visit Program in our licensed areas – assisted living and skilled nursing
    • An ‘essential caregiver visit’ is defined as a personal visit between a resident and an essential caregiver
    • These are only permitted in COVID negative facilities
    • Up to two essential caregivers can be designated per resident; each visit is limited to one essential caregiver at a time and will be by appointment only
    • We are finalizing the protocols that will include required training, ongoing testing, and waivers prior to the start of visitation
    • Visitation will include screening, documentation and required PPE
    • We look forward to welcoming back these family members after so many months
    • Please know that our resident’s and employee safety has always been our highest priority and we appreciate the support that our families, residents and team members have demonstrated during this time
  • Community Updates:
    • Early voting: They are reporting record turnout; we want everyone to vote, make sure you have your mask, maintain a safe distance from others, sanitize your hands after voting and consider the best time to vote based on reported average wait times
      • American Airlines Center is reporting low wait times, easy parking and access
      • Neighbors are reporting on Facebook that there are low wait times at the Lakewood Library
    • This morning was a park board meeting
      • Tony, athletic coordinator and head football coach at Woodrow Wilson High School announced that a football stadium was not needed
      • We are grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of this process that included dialogue among many of our neighbors in east Dallas
      • We are relieved; our informal poll showed that of the residents who responded, 90% expressed concern for a variety of reasons
      • We look forward to maintaining the relationships that have been created through this process – stay tuned for more information of how Fowler can become involved in the Friends of Willis Winters Park group
