COVID Briefing, July 30, 2020

  • Good afternoon Fowler Family!
  • COVID Update
    • Dallas County reported 704 new cases and 36 deaths yesterday
    • Nationally, we had 1400 deaths yesterday – one for every minute of the day
    • We are experiencing the residual losses from the high numbers of cases we saw weeks ago
    • It was the worst day for covid-19 deaths in more than two months, as Florida, California, North Carolina and Idaho recorded single-day highs
    • Starting this morning, the US House of Representatives will require face masks
    • Deborah Birx warns that while the surge has been in the south, she is seeing evidence of surges in the midwestern belt – Kentucky, Tennessee, southern Ohio, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska are surging and we continue to have problems across the West Coast – Washington state, Oregon, California, Idaho and Utah and now increases in Colorado
    • Internationally, many countries are seeing record surges – Africa is approaching the 1 million mark and the World Health officials are encouraging individuals to cancel pilgrimages and other religious/social celebrations having doubled their numbers in the last 25 days; Hong Kong has banned dine-in dining; Sweden’s mortality rate is the highest in the world, even higher than the US and hard hit Brazil; and Vietnam, once lauded for containing the virus is now experiencing a concerning surge and has closed all bars and prohibited gatherings larger than 30
    • The global Coronavirus pandemic is far from over
    • On a positive note, Johnson & Johnson launched human trials of its potential novel coronavirus vaccine in the United States on Thursday after an encouraging study showed that a single shot of the vaccine appeared to protect monkeys against infection. Other vaccine technologies currently in the last stages of U.S. human testing require two doses to be given weeks apart
  • Fowler Updates
    • Fowler remains COVID free – only due to our purposeful actions
    • We pledged in March that together we would try to mitigate our risk and reduce opportunity for COVID to come in our gates
    • Both of our teammate cases were one and done – there was no community spread
    • We attribute that to our infectious control efforts and these are still in place
      • Continuous sanitation of all common areas
      • Frequent hand washing
      • Screening all team members upon entry for their work-day as well as maintaining our social restrictions
      • Residents in our licensed areas are also screened and monitored daily
      • And we are all wearing masks
    • Residents in assisted living
      • We have significant mandates in assisted living which must be maintained
      • Your restrictions are still in place
        • No visitors or gathering with your friends in independent living
        • Those who live in FCA assisted living – you cannot go to the park
      • Fowler will always follow the rules
        • We will never do anything that could jeopardize our license or get us a deficiency which could lead to large fines
        • Three communities in Ohio have been fined $40,000 for rule violations
        • As a community, we depend on your compliance as well as our team members to these state mandates
        • Like you, we look forward to the day when our community can come back together again but for now, we must remain in our silos to prevent any potential spread
      • Teammates
        • I want to remind everyone that it is imperative that you maintain your distance from your team members to the best of your ability
          • Congregating in small offices for coffee cannot happen – you cannot drink coffee with a mask on
          • When eating at break room tables, the chairs must be at least 6 feet apart
          • The simple rule is wear a mask and maintain 6 feet of distance – if you cannot do both, then don’t gather
          • Do not let down your guard – every team member is essential and when one goes down, it impacts the team and our residents
          • We know people get sick, and no one will be penalized for being sick and adhering to our policies to monitor for symptoms, call when you are ill, don’t come to work when you are ill
          • We also know we can impact our own outcomes with simple steps of distancing and masking at Fowler and away
        • Tomorrow is the last day to renew your health insurance – get it to Erin Mason so you do not lapse in your coverage
      • We received a sweet note from friends at Northway Christian Church
        • Dear Friends, this note is from members of Northway Christian Church – Kay and Frank Ellis, Donna and Chuck Britain, and Cindy Dowell. Before COVID restrictions we came every Wednesday morning at 1030am to FCA Means building to lead Tai Chi. We want you to know we miss seeing each and every one of you. We think of you every Wednesday morning. We hope everyone is staying well.
