BRIEFING, MARCH 25, 2021

  • Good afternoon Fowler Family!
  • COVID UPDATE:
    • On Wednesday March 24, Dallas County added 270 cases and 21 deaths
    • Tuesday afternoon, Parkland Hospital closed its dedicated COVID ICU and returned it to its normal usage
      • This does not mean that there is no one in a hospital in Dallas County, but it does mean that there is a reduction in the numbers of individuals needing ICU beds and they are able to manage them in their regular ICU area
    • Dallas County has lowered our alert status from red to orange
      • Red status meant “Stay home stay safe” and orange means “Extreme Caution”
    • The world may soon have another vaccine – Astra Zeneca has released the data on their 32,000-patient study
      • Results show that their vaccine was 79% effective at preventing symptomatic COVID and 100% effective against severe disease
      • The vaccine was 85% effective in adults 65 years and older
  • FOWLER UPDATES:
    • Yesterday afternoon team members participated in a statewide call that explained the new visitation rules for our skilled nursing area.
      • Last night we received the revised rules from the state regarding visitation for our assisted living areas.
      • As we have experienced throughout the pandemic, the guidelines for various areas and from various authorities are not the same.
      • We do know that our visitation plans will be modified
      • At this point, we are still working on the unique differentiators that must be maintained and we hope to have more information for you next week
      • Its like the when the IRS changes a rule, but then it takes 6 months for them to explain it to you….we feel the same way
      • The guidelines often create more questions than they provide answers
      • We appreciate your patience – we are almost there
    • FCA internet has been down since last Thursday which has impacted phone and internet issues – for staff and residents
      • New cable is being pulled and we are waiting for a new part
      • As our staff phones are not working, we ask for your patience as we resolve this issue. Please know, we are not ignoring you if you are not getting a return call
      • We know that many of you are still experiencing interruption in your cable TV – that too is being addressed
    • Next Wednesday is Operation Clean Sweep
      • Staff – we are cleaning up work areas and storage areas –
      • Residents, we invite you to join us in our Spring-Cleaning efforts. We will have shredders available and dumpsters if you have items in your home to purge.
  • IN OTHER NEWS
    • Apple Podcasts has reported that a daily podcast featuring a Bible study has been at the top of the charts since January 2 ahead of secular podcasts produced by the New York Times, NBC News and NPR.
      • Called The Bible in a Year, each podcast is 15 -25 minutes long and features 2-3 scriptural readings, a reflection on those readings and a prayer.
      • Father Mike Schmitz, a Catholic priest who is the narrator, states that the success of the podcast clearly shows people’s hunger for God’s word
  • WOMEN IN HISTORY MONTH
    • Today’s hero is Ebby Halliday – one of the first successful female entrepreneurs in Dallas and is recognized as the First Lady of Real Estate
      • Vera Lucille Koch was born March 9, 1911 in Leslie Arkansas to impoverished wheat farmers
      • When the price of wheat dropped to 10 cents making it no longer worth producing, Ebby did whatever she could to help her family, even going door-to-door selling Cloverine hand lotion for a two-cent commission
      • After graduating from high school, she got a $10/week job selling women’s hats at in Kansas City
      • Less than a year later, she was the top salesperson
      • In 1938, then Vera Koch set out for Dallas to manage the millinery department at Dallas’ WA Green Store on Elm Street.
      • By 1945, Ebby started her own boutique, Ebby’s Hats on Fairmount Street just west of McKinney
      • At the same time, Ebby applied for a Texas Real Estate broker license
      • Shortly after that she sold her first home, making a $285 commission on a concrete walled house in what was then the town of Walnut Hill. The development was an experimental pet project of Clint Murchison Sr, and was the beginning of Ebby Halliday Realtors
      • Murchison later shared he approached Ebby about selling the concrete houses as they didn’t quite have the aesthetic appeal of other homes and were a difficult sell. He famously said, “if you can get my wife to buy one of those hats of yours, you can sell anything!”
      • In 1957, Ebby was elected president of the Women’s Council of the National Association of Real Estate Boards
      • In 1958, while traveling for a speaking engagement in Beaumont, Ebby met Maurice Acers. They married on Easter Sunday 1965 at Central Christian Church in Dallas.
      • In her life, she was known as a tremendous salesperson and businesswoman
      • But her true legacy was in her mentorship and philanthropy – she invested in the lives of people and was known for hiring single mothers and divorcees who would otherwise struggle to support their families
      • Ebby was also known for her Ebby-isms – platitudes that she used in her public speaking
        • “People are impressed by what they see, what they hear, and what they feel in your presence”
        • “At Ebby Halliday Realtors, we expect women to act like ladies and do business like men”
        • “Keep a positive attitude and remember that smiling works”
        • And our favorite “Do something for someone every day.”
      • She continued to go to the office daily until she was 100 years old
      • Prior to her death in 2015, Ebby lived at Jackson Living Center and we were blessed and inspired by her kindness and giving spirit
      • Throughout her career, Ebby won many awards
        • In 1963, Ebby was named Texas Realtor of the Year
        • She received the Horatio Alger Award in 2005
        • In 2008 Ebby received the Linz Award for her charitable works
        • In 2013, Ebby was Fowler’s first Visionary Woman
      • The Ebby House at Juliette Fowler Communities was named for Ebby to honor her life as a champion for women and girls – somewhat like our own Juliette – and to recognize her as a role model, mentor and an inspiration
