- COVID UPDATE:
- Yesterday, Dallas County reported 383 new cases of COVID and 35 deaths
- The day before, they reported 245 new cases and 13 deaths
- Authorities have stated that these numbers are artificially low as the weather has disrupted the reporting system
- Across the state, 7609 COVID patients are in Texas hospitals, including 2122 in the Dallas Fort Worth Area.
- On Tuesday 13.38% of patients in the hospital region were COVID patients – below the 15% threshold that the state has been using to define high hospitalizations
- To date, 2.5 million Texans have had COVID; over 41,000 have lost their lives
- The vaccine sites in Dallas have been disrupted by the weather – Fair Park will be closed through Saturday and once open, priority will be given to those who need their 2nd dose
- FOWLER UPDATES:
- The good news is that ERCOT and ONCOR have announced the end of the intentional blackouts; no new rolling blackouts will be implemented, and any new loss of power will be due to an equipment malfunction
- Here at Fowler, we continue to manage weather impact
- We have had volunteers respond to our call to shovel snow off sidewalks
- We have even had volunteers from the neighborhood walk dogs
- BLACK HISTORY MONTH
- After our story on Tuesday, resident John T. suggested we tell the story of a local minister that he knows – Rev. Zan Holmes
- Zan Holmes was born in San Angelo in 1935
- He graduated Cum Laude from Huston-Tillotson University in Austin
- He holds two graduate degrees from Perkins School of Theology at SMU where he also served as Adjunct Professor of Preaching for 24 years
- He is pastor emeritus at St Luke’s United Methodist Church, a church he grew to 6000-members as the senior pastor for 28 years.
- He is known as much for his community activism as he is known for his preaching and teaching
- Holmes was elected to the Texas House of Representatives from 1968-1972 while he also served as a United Methodist District Superintendent
- In 1991, Governor Ann Richards appointed him to be the first African American to serve on the Board of Regents of the University of Texas System, a position he held from 1991 to 1997.
- In 1971, Judge William Taylor of the United States Court for the Northern District of Texas appointed him to serve as chairperson of the Tri-Ethnic Committee, which oversaw the implementation of public school desegregation in the Dallas Independent School District
- In 2001, the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute in Selma, Alabama recognized him as one of the civil rights movement’s “Invisible Giants.”
- As a minister, he is widely known for his role as narrator and host of the Disciple Bible Study video series
- He authored Reaching for Renewal (1991), Encountering Jesus (1992), and When Trouble Comes (1996)
- In 2012, DISD named the state-of-the-art, Zan Wesley Holmes Middle School in his honor
- Holmes is the founding president of the Dallas African American Pastors Coalition. Under his leadership the Coalition was the Primary developer of Unity Estates, which is a community of 300 affordable homes, and is a national model for a major inter-denominational economic initiative
- Pastor Holmes is an active lifetime member of the NAACP
- He and his wife Carrie live in Dallas
- The heroes walk among us using their gifts and talents to serve others
