- FOWLER UPDATES:
- Diversity – A Single Story
- As you know, Chaplain Venessa will complete her Masters of Divinity this semester – she is counting down the weeks – only 8 more weeks of school – YEA VE!
- One of her classes recently watched a video entitled “A Single Story”
- It is a TED talk that was filmed in 2009 but it is as timely today as it was then
- The speaker was Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
- She speaks about how as a child, she read books written by western and European authors and they formed a framework in her mind about the world, about people, about cultures, about what she should and should not do
- From a single story from her childhood, she created a narrative that generalized her image of the world, one that she carried with her into adulthood
- When she came to the United States to go to the University, she learned that her roommate had formed a generalized image of her, about all people from Africa, based on a single story as well
- Her examples demonstrated the dangers of basing our decisions on a single story and how easily we can fall into that trap
- Who among us would want the story of our life to be based on a single experience?
- Do I want the story of my life to be based on my 18-year-old self or my 53-year old self – Neither. The culmination of my life story, the failures, the heart break, the mistakes, the success make up my full story
- My collective life story is a more informed viewpoint
- My point is that a single vantage point is limiting
- Robyn De Angelo wrote “we must be willing to consider that unless we have devoted intentional and ongoing study, our opinions are necessarily uninformed, event ignorant.”
- As we continue to have conversations about racism, I want to challenge each of us to seek out multiple forms of education so that we are informed
- The TED Talk is available for you to view on Channel 2. You can also watch online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9Ihs241zeg&ab_channel=TED
- This video is thought-provoking and supports our current conversation on diversity and I hope you will take the time to watch it
- NEIGHBORHOOD UPDATE: Winters Park – the former Randall Park
- We have talked in the past at Town Hall meetings about the conversations that are currently taking place about the usage of Randall Park, now Willis Winters Park
- Fowler is hosting a Zoom Information Meeting next week
- My role is to moderate and represent your voices
- We will do a controlled poll to learn more about your opinions
- What questions do you have about the proposed plan?
- I also want to encourage us as neighbors to be involved in our neighborhood
- There are some opportunities in the near future for us to participate in
- TEAMMATE TUESDAY
- Happy Birthday to Sylvia F! Today is her birthday.
- Happy Birthday to Jeana S. and Regina S. who celebrate their birthdays this Thursday the 17th.
- Wishing Susana O. a very happy birthday! Susana’s birthday is this Saturday the 19th!
- Tomorrow, the 16th is Zelalam K’s 5 year anniversary! Happy anniversary Z!
- Michelle M. celebrates her one-year anniversary with us on the 17th! Happy anniversary!
- I just got off the phone with Chandler B- his mom was Margie B and she lived with us in the Worth Neighborhood prior to her passing away after a short stay in Carroll. Chandler wanted to lift up the entire teams in Worth and Carroll and shared that all of these teammates that they encountered were always professional and “put together”. He and his family are very grateful for the care that she received at the PNCC in both neighborhoods. He especially wanted to lift up Tina who was instrumental in facilitating FaceTime calls when the family was no longer able to visit due to the Pandemic.
- We recently had training on a new module- Engaged!- in the I’m Still Here Program which is the programming model used in Worth Neighborhood. Our Life Enrichment Coordinator, Jackie M, will be implementing the programming in the Carroll Neighborhood. After Jackie participated in the Engaged! Program training she used it with one of our residents. They read about/discussed a favorite topic for the resident- Birds- using the tablets. Jackie shared that our resident thoroughly enjoyed the program/time spent using the tablets to read and discuss. Way to Pursue Excellence Jackie!
- Thank you – and make it a great day on purpose!
